The story:
If you like to eat tuna, then there is a very good chance you have tried albacore. Known as “chicken of the sea”, different species of albacore can be found all over the world. Here in Santa Cruz, California we have to work hard to catch our albacore. The albacore typically can be found between 35 to 60 miles off our coastline, which means a lot of boat time in typically very windy seas. This t-shirt honors all of those sport fisher people who have powered it out and put in the long hours to bring home their prized fish to feed their family.

My t-shirt line is called “uroko”, meaning “fish scales” in Japanese. Uroko celebrates the people who find peace in the ocean waves, food and sport from the creatures that live within our planet’s fresh and salt waters, and camaraderie from the togetherness that we share in experiencing these wonderful gifts that we have a chance to interact with. Thank you for supporting my passion of making fun t-shirts.

This new tee honors Coho Salmon. Between fishing for them here in the Monterey Bay and up in Port Hardy, B.C. since I was 3 years old, I have developed tremendous love and respect for this fish over the years. It has fed my family for generations and I hope to help protect it by promoting sustainable fishing practices so that the future generations can develop the relationship that I have with this amazing species.

If you have a love for the ocean and all of the creatures in it, then most likely you respect the legendary oceanographer and marine biologist, Jacque Yves-Cousteau. Based on my art work for the 2015 Great Highway Gallery show in San Francisco titled, “We Will All Live Under the Sea”, this t-shirt design honors this man and all of his accomplishments. This limited production, 3 color design is printed with water-based ink on a 50 cotton/ 50 poly soft blend t-shirt (Next Level Cut). If you are 190 lbs., 6’2″, and like a fit that is form fitting but not tight, then you would be a size XL for example.

The story:
My drawings, paintings, and block prints of water are all done from memory. Countless hours of sitting on a board or bobbing around on a boat has allowed me to really look at the surface of water and study all of the elements that influence it’s surface. I don’t get tired of the this subject matter. For this t-shirt design, rather than become impatient while waiting on hold with my medical insurance company, I chose to escape and focus on better places than where I was in the now. The drawing was done on a small notepad. Life is good. I hope you enjoy the design.

Halibut. Whether you are spear fishing for them or lugging them off of a secret sand bar you know about, they are spectacular fish to catch and eat. If you have ever fished for halibut, you probably have a story to tell. I know I do. Send your story and a picture of your catch to alex [!at] ascstudio.com and I will post it on our Instagram account urokolife and feature your story on our blog at www.uroko.life

This halibut tee features a breaking wave that follows the backbone of the halibut. I can’t tell you how many halibut I would spot while surfing as a kid. Then, when I would go back out for them with my hawaiian sling, I wouldn’t see a single fish … fishing, you got to love it.

The “Reflection” t- shirt design stems from an original silver gelatin print that I made from a photo that I had taken here in Santa Cruz while walking West Cliff. I have sold several of these photographs over the years and have always wanted to make a t-shirt from it. My dream is realized with this 2 color t-shirt that uses water-based inks to keep the integrity of the soft t-shirt that supports the graphic. Meaning, no blocky plasticky print methods used here. You barely know that this large scale image is a part of the tee unless you look in the mirror.

The story:
I have been fishing, surfing, drawing, and painting most of my life. My first serious fishing adventure started when I was 5, when I started fishing off of the Washington State coast with my Grandad for salmon. This t-shirt design honors him and all of the wonderful experiences that we have had together. The design is hand drawn and printed here in Santa Cruz, California. If you look closely, you can even see a few little breaking waves within the scales of the fish.
